Sr. Accountant

We are looking for a Senior Accountant to join our growing Accounting Team in Australia. In this role, you will provide accounting support for Smartsheet, an increasingly complex, high-growth SaaS company with expanding international operations. The team is currently responsible for the Australian and Japanese legal entities which are subsidiaries of Smartsheet. This highly visible position will encompass a work scope across Corporate Accounting and other accounting and finance functions as required.

This position reports to the Accounting Manager in Sydney.

You Will:

  • Participate in the monthly close process, including preparation of journal entries including but not limited to: daily bank activity, corporate credit card charges, employee expenses, fixed assets, accruals, prepayments, intercompany; and meeting internal deadlines
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations for assigned areas
  • Participate in the annual statutory reporting process including but not limited to: financial statements and fringe benefits tax reporting
  • Develop a deep understanding of the transactional flow through various systems to monitor and ensure accurate financial results
  • Provide analysis of variances between financial results month-over-month and quarter-over-quarter
  • Review, assess, and make recommendations for the processes which lead to or impact recognition of expenses in the appropriate period
  • Create and maintain standard operating procedures
  • Help us continue to build and scale our processes, in accordance with best practices
  • Participate in continued development and evaluation of internal controls and processes, in accordance with best practices
  • Prepare accounting schedules required as support for quarterly and annual filings
  • Create high-quality workpapers, calculations and memos as needed
  • Review invoices and employee expenses

You Have:

  • 5+ years relevant work experience in accounting/audit practice and/or finance functions, public accounting company experience strongly preferred
  • Chartered Accountant or equivalent certification
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting preferred
  • Knowledge of AASB/IFRS (US GAAP also preferred)
  • Knowledge of and experience with an ERP system and online accounting software preferred (NetSuite highly preferred)
  • Knowledge of GST (with experience coding invoices for GST preferred)
  • Deep understanding of financial accounting, financial statements, and ability to understand and willingness to learn technical accounting concepts and topics
  • Ability to interact and effectively communicate with the AU-based accounting team and remain professional and flexible under pressure
  • Willingness to approach tasks hands-on and balance requirements of preparing deliverables
  • Highly detail-oriented and excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build complete and streamlined accounting operations
  • Ability to analyse problems, develop/recommend solutions, and resolve issues
